LIVES AND WORKS IN LONDON, UK

Sunyoung Hwang (b.1988) is a London based artist who received her BFA in Fine Art from the Slade School of Fine Art in 2012 and completed a MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art in 2016. The artist depicts the pure basic elements of painting - color, line, and shape - on the canvas in an intuitive and instinctive flow. Her canvases are a combination of free brushstrokes, bold use of color, and the accidental effects that result from them, which tense and relax together. Hwang’s abstraction is not simply a representation of the senses, but the projection of imagination through the experience of existing universals and inner worlds onto the object, which is highly subjective and sometimes specific.

The artist’s recent solo and duo shows include 《Flashforward》(A-Lounge, Seoul, Korea, 2024), 《Convergence and Collapse》(Grove, London, UK, 2021), 《I Feel Guilty About Missing You. Because I Didn’t Feel Guilty About Leaving You》(Galerie ERD, Seoul, Korea, 2019), 《The Echoes of Forgotten Nights | The Chadwell Award 2016-17 Winner’s Exhibition》(Nunnery Gallery, London, UK, 2018). Major selected group exhibition is 《APRICITY》(FRIEZE LONDON, NO.9 Cork Street, London, UK, 2024). The artist was longlisted as a finalist for Jackson’s Painting Prize (2020), and Young Contemporary Talent (2018). and She was the winner of the Chadwell Award (2016). She has previously participated in Hangar Residency at Hangar Artistic Research Centre, Lisbon (2019) and SÍM Residency at The Association of Icelandic Visual Artists, Reykjavík (2015)
